The 20th century saw what might be called the inception of
modern day
sunglasses.
In 1929, Sam Foster of the Foster Grant Company sold his first pair of sunglasses on the Atlantic City boardwalk in NJ. By 1930, sunglasses were all
the rage.

Cat’s-eye sunglasses that slant up at the corners were a '50's staple. Hollywood actresses Marilyn
Men's Sunglasses were Rayban's Famous Gold Filled Aviators & Clubmasters. 
Onassis Vintage Sun Glasses or "Jackie O's" were the trend, named after Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Big and oval with wide plastic frames were a fad back in the '60’s. 
Teashades were favorites among men as they looked good and tended to make a social statement. Pop icons such as Mick Jagger, Roger Daltrey, John Lennon, Jerry Garcia, Boy George, Liam Gallagher and Ozzy Osbourne all wore Teashades. 
Combining quality and style, no women's sunglasses were better known and loved than the classic Ray-Ban Wayfarer. Introduced in 1952, they were widely popularized in the '60's and 'til the late '70’s. 
Huge oversized sunglasses were the trend in male sunglasses in this era. Elton John wore them on stage in the '70s as part of his Captain Fantastic show. After 1967, the Beatles went full-blown hippie, best illustrated by John Lennon’s signature round glasses (and sunglasses). 
The use of the new plastic Optyl continued to expand in the sunglasses
Shutter Shades designed by Alain Mikli were preferred. They were very bright and came in different colors and styles. Instead of having lenses, they had shutter motifs, which were a part of the frame. Wayfarers were extremely popular too.
