One of the reasons that sunglasses have become an essential part of most people's lives, is that nothing else we wear can change how we look, our whole image, as quickly as putting sunglasses on. 

This reminds me of something I learned many years ago, which I'd like to share with you today.

Sunglasses and image shortcuts

The power of sunglasses as an instant way to change our image was first introduced to me years ago, when I took an art class. One of the things our tutor taught us, was that there were certain shortcuts we could use, to immediately change the image of a person, when drawing them. 

Two things stuck with me from that particular class.

The first was that the eyes were always the most important part of the face. Any drawing of a person could be changed completely, simply by changing where their eyes were focused. So, a picture of someone with their eyes focusing down would look very different, from the exact same drawing, with their eyes looking directly at you. BTW: The same is true for photography.

The second thing, was that adding sunglasses to the character in a drawing, is the quickest and easiest way to completely change their image. He gave the example of Snoopy, Charlie Brown's dog from Peanuts. This cute little dog was suddenly transformed from Snoopy, to Joe Cool [see above image] -- just by adding some shades. Adding sunglasses to Snoopy allowed the artist to say more, than would have been possible with tons of dialogue.
